How to Avoid Pickpockets – In Europe

|

Portugal-People-in-GuimaraesWhere Are They Coming From?

How to avoid pickpockets in Europe takes on major importance as large numbers of tourists flock to Europe for their dream vacations.  Since the borders of European countries are now more fluid, thieves travel easily from poorer Eastern European nations to the most high profile and frequently visited cities on the continent to search for victims.

What to Expect in Portugal

How to avoid pickpockets in Portugal has not become a major problem yet in Lisbon.  Street theft and pickpocketing have not become as widespread here as in other major European cities, although you are constantly advised to be alert to people near you when visiting tourist sites. Apparently, the well dressed tourist taking pictures beside you could also be a professional thief. I think unconsciously we may be less wary of other “tourists” and tend to focus our attention on people who might approach us as locals with bad intentions.

How to Avoid Pickpockets in Paris……. A Serious Problem

A serious problem recently reported in Paris involves groups of gypsy thieves, many of them  teenagers, who flock to the main tourist sites and prey on the tourists.  They will surround someone using an ATM machine and are fearless in grabbing his money in broad daylight. Portugal-People-at-Outdoor-Cafe400Known as Roma, these gangs are not afraid of the police.  They are traveling communities primarily from Romania and Bulgaria that the police wanted to evict from the center of Paris, since they are behind most of the crime against foreign tourists. However, a number of human rights groups have protested that these poor communities were being unfairly stigmatized and that as citizens of the EU they have the right to live and work in France. How to avoid pickpockets is an ongoing problem, so travelers to Paris should be especially vigilant and carry very little cash with them. A well hidden money belt would be the best place for your money and the one credit card you carry with you.

Other Tourist Crimes in Paris

Tourists of one nationality have had great difficulties with being attacked while sightseeing in Paris.  As more and more Chinese tourists are visiting the City of Light, they have become street crime targets.  In an effort to protect its citizens, China has taken the unusual action of sending some of its own police to Paris to aid the Chinese tourists. As it happens, I will be in Paris for a couple of days in June and will learn firsthand how to avoid the pickpockets harassing tourists in the city.

Have you ever been a victim of pickpockets?
