Westin Palace Madrid – Highly Recommended Affordable Luxury Hotel

Built in 1912 and commissioned by King Alfonso XIII, the interior of this beautiful historic building has been completely modernized and updated.  It was selected for the Conde Nast Traveler Gold List in 2010 as one of the world’s best hotels.

This highly recommended affordable luxury hotel has an outstanding location just a few minutes from Madrid’s three outstanding art museums:  The Prado, the Thyssen-Bournemisza Museum, and the Reina Sofia Museum.    Many of the rooms overlook the wide, picturesque Paseo del Prado boulevard with its classical Neptune Fountain and parklike pedestrian walkways.

As Madrid is a very walkable city, it is easy to walk to the Plaza Mayor and explore the narrow streets with well known tapas bars and small restaurants that surround it.  The Mercado de San Miguel, an upscale food and wine location that allows you to pick and choose tapas from many different vendors and then eat them at little tables arranged around the inside of this large building, is very close to the Plaza Mayor.

The Westin Palace is famous for its stained glass dome which covers the bar and breakfast area.  It is worth stopping by the hotel, even if you are not staying there, to have a drink in the bar and admire the colorful dome in this recommended affordable luxury hotel.

For a room with a wonderful view of the Neptune fountain and many beautiful buildings rising out of the trees, ask for room 432 or the rooms on either side of it.  There is a very small balcony which allows you to take pictures of the surrounding area from a much better vantage point than at street level.  Sitting at the window in the evening admiring the lights on the historic buildings is even more magical.

Tiara Park Atlantic Hotel – Highly Recommended Affordable Luxury Hotel in Lisbon

Perched on a hill overlooking Parque Eduardo VII, the Tiara Park Atlantic Hotel is a highly recommended affordable luxury hotel with a contemporary design and a convenient location to some of the most upscale shops in Lisbon on Avenida da Liberdade.

Lisbon has more hills than Madrid, but after walking down the hill to the main boulevard you can head down to the harbor while enjoying the many alluring upscale shops and architecturally interesting buildings along the way.  This can be a pleasant parklike walk if you choose to remain in the pedestrian center of the very wide thoroughfare or an up-close shopping experience if you continue along the sidewalks.

Another major convenience for this recommended affordable luxury hotel is the easy trip to Lisbon international airport which only takes about 20 minutes.

A room with an excellent view to request is room 1510.  From such a high vantage point, it offers a beautiful city and river view, which complements the spacious, well-appointed room with a king bed.  It is very comfortable and will add to your luxury experience at the hotel.
