An Historic Place in Portugal

Finding a hidden gem you may not know about is one of the special bonuses of river cruising.  Not only do you visit small, picturesque towns along the river that you would otherwise never discover, but a hidden gem you may not know about can be only a short distance away once you are out of the main cities.

Guimarães – A Hidden Gem You May Not Know About

Portugal has many beautiful towns and small cities scattered around the country, which you might never find unless you embark on a road discovery trip.

However, Guimarães is a small city conveniently located less than an hour from Porto, the embarkation or debarkation port for the Douro River cruises.  It is one of the country’s most historical cities and was settled in the 9th century.

Because of major political and military events that took place here leading to the creation of Portugal as a country in the 12th century, it is considered the cradle of the Portugese nationality.

The Future of Guimarães

Being named a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its historical center has increased the present day importance and tourism benefits for Guimarães, the hidden gem you may not know about.

Since 2005, the city has possessed an important cultural center which has resulted in a booming cultural life for its citizens.  Guimarães was named the European Capital of Culture in 2012, a significant honor.

In 2011, the New York Times designated Guimarães as one of the 41 places to visit that year.  So, what would attract you to this scenic place?  Guimarães has an impressive castle dating from the 10th century and a major palace built originally about 500 years later.

The historic buildings and town square in this UNESCO World Heritage Site are well maintained and offer a beautiful view into typical Portugese architecture from the past.  It is easy to take a lot of pictures, while admiring the charming building facades that are around every corner.

Although Guimarães is a hidden gem you may not know about, it is a place you will want to become acquainted with the next time you  are in Portugal.
